Investors lose Rs 6.6 lakh crore

MUMBAI: On Monday, headline writers were left desperately searching for a word that would capture the mind-moggling fall of the Sensex...Plunge, plummet, free fall...Everything that had worked earlier now seemed so tame. Even bloodbath, carnage or mayhem wasn't bloody enough.

Till Monday, the steepest fall in the history of the Sensex had been 826 points. A fall of over 2,000 points in the space of five hours was like the forces of gravity going into devilish overdrive. There was some rearguard action in the closing minutes of trading, but the full day's loss was still a record-battering 1,408 points.

Yes, the market, which lost 687 points last Friday and 1,814 points in the space of a week, had expected what insiders like to call a "further correction".

Amidst the rubble, Union's women push for national title

JACKSON, Tenn. -- On Tuesday, Feb. 5, the Union University women's basketball team -- the No. 1-ranked National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics team in the nation, with a spotless record of 22-0 -- was scheduled to have a day off from practice. The Lady Bulldogs had played at Lyon College in Batesville, Ark., the night before and didn't arrive back at campus until 2:30 a.m.

The day turned out to be far from restful, though.

Low-calorie sweets for your sweet

Buy single-serving portions (but not the king size) to satisfy a sweet tooth once in a while. Enjoy eating it slowly, tasting each bit.Put flavored yogurt in a fancy dish with a graham cracker stick or two. Try a new flavor such as lemon meringue, key lime or white chocolate flavor mousse.Cottage cheese and fruit makes a healthy sweet alternative.Ice cream sundae: 1/2 cup scoop of low fat ice cream put in a fancy small bowl. Drizzle with 1 tablespoon chocolate syrup, add a dollop of low-calorie whipped topping with a cherry and sprinkle of nuts. Eat slowly and enjoy! (It's a regular sundae, but the attention to portion size makes a difference!)Treat yourself to a frozen dessert (such as ice cream bars or sandwiches) that are the mini-size or low fat/low sugar.Apple, blueberry or peach crisp: Use your own recipe, but decrease the sugar or Splenda when sprinkling the fruit.

Greens split over roads vs. rails measure

The single-occupancy vehicle drivers need to pay for roads through tolls. If we want to get people out of their cars, we need to quit subsidizing them. The trucks that spew pollution and chew up the roads need to be paying their fair share, too. They say that they pay lots of taxes, but not enough to cover the REAL costs. Why should I pay MORE in taxes while working to cut my driving to almost nothing? Why am I now DOUBLE TAXED for my Flexcar membership, which is helping me cut my miles driven? How about tolls that not only pay ALL the expenses of roads, but additionally support mass transit and bicycle commuting options? And while we're at it, how about traffic laws, new, SAFE bike lanes, and facilities to encourage bicycle commuting--which is about the most eco friendly and efficient way to move people known to man?

Rutgers wants revenge against No. 1 Tennessee

She was the only player on either team to finish with a double-double (20 points, 10 rebounds) in the NCAA final loss.

Perhaps if she'd gotten more rebounding help, Rutgers could have given the Lady Vols a better fight. The Knights were outrebounded 42-34, and Tennessee pulled down 24 offensive boards and scored 22 second-chance points.

Rutgers has to be better this time around. The Lady Vols start a frontcourt of two 6-4 players and one 6-footer. With Vaughn now joined in Rutgers' post by fellow 6-4 center Rashidat Junaid, there is a chance the rebounding will improve.

"We know now that rebounding -- not just defense -- wins championships," Vaughn said. "That was hurtful, the way we lost. It was not good. We looked at the tape, and that was our weakness.
