Wireless Monitoring Of People And Things: Future Of Social Networking?

The project explores the use of radio-frequency identification, or RFID, tags in a social environment. The team has installed some 200 antennas in the Paul Allen Center for Computer Science and Engineering. Early next month researchers will begin recruiting 50 volunteers from about 400 people who regularly use the building.

"Our goal is to ask what benefits can we get out of this technology and how can we protect people's privacy at the same time," Balazinska said. "We want to get a handle on the issues that would crop up if these systems become a reality."

Many businesses already use RFID tags to track products in the supply chain. Now the tool is moving to other areas. Some transit agencies use radio tags in bus and train passes. The new U.S. passports incorporate RFID tags.

Curtain Call

Apocalyptic Butterflies, now playing at the Bay Theatre Company in Annapolis, flutters around its themes but ultimately never lands the apocalyptic punch the title has set us up to expect. It is quite funny, with many laugh-out-loud moments effective because of the writing, but it lacks the depth and heart to make it matter much past the curtain call.

In the best scene, one character tells another one that all her moments in life are like dots strung on a timeline. That is exactly how this comedy plays out: focused on the dots of important moments rather than the more important, messy and fragile part: the string of actions connecting the important moments.

Over the course of three days leading up to Christmas, Apocalyptic Butterflies shows us the world of Hank Tater (played by Brandon McCoy) and his wife Muriel (Kate Williams).

Dakar Rally canceled due to terror concerns; 1st time race called off ...

PARIS (AP) -The annual Dakar Rally was canceled Friday on the eve of the race because of terror threats and the recent slaying of a French family in Mauritania that was blamed on al-Qaida-linked militants.

It was the first time in the 30-year history of the automobile, motorcycle and truck race across the Sahara Desert that it has been called off. In a statement, organizers blamed international tensions, the tourists' Dec. 24 murders and "threats launched directly against the race by terrorist organizations."

"No other decision but the cancellation of the sporting event could be taken," they said.

France, where the race organizers are based, had urged the rally to avoid Mauritania after the family of four was slain in an attack blamed on a terror cell that uses the Mauritanian desert as a hide-out.

Get TechWeb's RSS Feed

It's most often used for showing the latest headlines from online newspapers, magazines, weblogs, and vendor and technology information sites.

Using Automatic Discovery
To access an RSS feed, you need a software program known as a news aggregator or RSS reader. If you already have a news aggregator and it supports auto-discovery, you can usually add an RSS link for a given site by using your aggregator to surf the home page of that Web site.

Adding An RSS Link Manually
When auto-discovery doesn't work, the manual process is easy enough:

1. Copy the RSS feed link from the content site. For many people, this is the most confusing step. If you see an XML icon like this , and you're using Internet Explorer in Windows, you can right-click this button and choose Copy Shortcut to copy the RSS link.

News is a Conversation

The law may see it differently, the former teacher faces jail time if convicted.

But do any of the above factors act against adherence to our naming policy?

That was the question we wrestled with last night.

Arguing against disclosure...We have a responsibility to protect the young victim even if she is not interested in protecting herself. Ten years from now she may wish her name had not been part of the record...Married or not, she was the victim of rape and the policy should apply...We're not only dealing with a 16-year-old victim, but there will be a child soon and that child's anonymity also will be jeopardized.

Now we know the young woman's identity is clearly known in her own small community. But if her name appears in our story it wil be archived in a searchable data base.

Furniture from China for new FBR buildings

ISLAMABAD, Feb 1: Although Pakistan itself is a major exporter of good-quality furniture, the Federal Board of Revenue has decided to import furniture for new tax buildings from China under a World Bank-funded project.

Sources in the FBR told Dawn on Friday that an official delegation, led by a senior income tax official, was currently in Beijing for negotiating deals with Chinese furniture manufacturers.

The move appears to be a compulsion from the World Bank to purchase furniture from the market outside Pakistan, and it speaks of the attitude exhibited by the tax machinery functionaries who negotiate such matters with international donor agencies, said a source.

Pakistan exported furniture worth $6.105 million during the first half of the current fiscal year against $5.793 million in the corresponding period last year.As Pakistan was an exporter of furniture, there was no need for its import, said the source, adding it would be a unique case that a government department would be importing furniture for its office on loans to be paid by the taxpayers.

Miscalculations dogged Romney from the start

Charisma is always more important that experience in an elections. Experience in nuanced areas foreign policy of foreign policy will be left to the Brzezinskis and Kissingers of this word. What the USA needs is a change in public perception and from over here it looks like Obama is the only candidate who can provide that. Both McCain's and Hillary's past involvement in some pretty sleazy scandals will probably continue to haunt them.
