Detroit Concept Cars Show Considerable Promise

Auto show concept cars are often radical design studies that end up being tamed before they are produced (if they are produced at all). But the crop of concepts at this year's North American International Auto Show in Detroit shows plenty of promise, especially crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) like the Cadillac Provoq and Ford Explorer America, which use alternative fuel sources to improve efficiency and lower emissions. The Detroit auto show is held at the Cobo Center and is open to the public January 19-27.

Audi R8 V12 TDI

Audi is well on its way to changing the perceptions of diesel engines with its R8 V12 TDI concept. This sports car looks and performs like a Ferrari, but averages 23 miles per gallon, roughly the same as a family sedan equipped with a V6 engine.

Around the world in 30 days

But to a non-Muslim, the fact that you are starving yourself from dawn to dusk is an extreme act of worship. That's what can really niggle people, especially when it comes to parents.

“Most parents, and especially mothers, want their kids well fed. So when you're at home with your mum and she asks if you want breakfast, and you say, ‘No Ma, I'm fasting,' and ‘Do you want lunch?' and you say no again — it really rattles cages. For a lot of people like me, the month of Ramadan can be a really difficult month — not from the food side, but from trying to avoid arguments because you're not having any food."

Nevertheless, it doesn't mean Gora is entirely alone. There are nearly 1.6 million Muslims in the United Kingdom, making up 2.8 percent of the country. The UK has witnessed a surge in conversions to Islam, with several prominent celebrity converts in its midst, including Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens), and Yvonne Ridley, the tabloid journalist made famous when she was kidnapped by the Taliban.

New device lowers high blood pressure to normal levels

The University of Rochester Medical Center is leading the way with a new device that automatically lowers extremely high blood pressure to normal levels.

Anthony Cringoli had his kidney removed after being diagnosed with cancer and his blood pressure almost immediately spiked.

"It was immediate after a couple of weeks. I had issues now I'm on six blood pressure medicines and they don't even work," Anthony said.

Anthony is part of a unique study started at the U of R Medical Center three years ago testing an implantable device that will help lower his dangerously high blood pressure. University of Rochester Medical Center vascular surgeon, Dr. Karl Illig is now enrolling people for the second phase of this groundbreaking study.

"I helped a patient in Alabama and the day after surgery the pressure was 210 down to 102 so we can drop it 60 to 70 under the right circumstances," Dr.

Riding luxury's wave

It's not a great time to be in the car-selling business, what with a wobbly U.S. economy and the prospect of $4-a-gallon gasoline.

But Rick Niello, president of the Sacramento-based Niello Co., begs to differ.

The company's rapid expansion of luxury brands and its doubling of sales and staff over the last seven years hasn't slowed during the sputtering economy. At least so far.
