Make time for uninhibited play in your life

My father seldom, if ever, took any time to play instead choosing to remain in that fast-paced corporate world which he had caged himself. My mother used to say that a two week vacation was never enough because it would take him a full two weeks to get over the stress and pace of his work before he could even begin to relax and enjoy himself.Even the idea of waiting for a scheduled vacation to play defeats the purpose of it in the first place. And perhaps thats what happens to so many of us. We are so bound by our daily duties and routines that play, even in small doses, seems alien to who we are. And thats not a good thing.I once read, We need to play so that we can rediscover the magical around us. And part of the magic is stopping what were doing for a time and enjoying the playful side which is buried inside each of us beneath the costume of our adulthood.Yes, we all must work to fulfill our responsibilities but if theres no room for play, then whats the point?Id love to tell you more but Keaton is patiently waiting for me to stop and play and thankfully I havent forgotten how.

Libraries Will Soon Move Into Bay Area BART Stations

CCC Library is working with BART to put the machines at BART stations and shopping centers. The first Library-a-Go-Go machine will be available at the Pittsburg/Bay Point BART station sometime in April.

This is a fantastic idea, said chairman and District V Supervisor Federal D. Glover. It just makes so much sense to bring books right to the people, especially in the Bay Area, where we average the second-longest commute in the country.

The first phase will put machines at three other locations, including the transit village at the BART station in Pleasant Hill, a site in Byron/Discovery Bay and a fourth location that has yet to be decided.

The idea is perfect for the far eastern area of Contra Costa County, such as Discovery Bay, Byron Knightsen and Bethel Island, where brick and mortar libraries are lacking.

Maternity leave for students?

And this little person needs round-the-clock care. Who do they think is going to take care of that baby if the mother goes off to P.E.?

We, as mothers, know how physically and emotionally tough the transition can be after giving birth — much less for a young girl who has no idea what she has gotten herself into.

It's a terrible situation. We need to prevent teen pregnancy, but once it's happened we have to help these young women take care of themselves and their newborns. And I don't think giving them some time off from school to recover and bond with their infant is going to encourage some girl to go out and get pregnant.

So now you know where I'm standing on this. Tell us what you think? Should schools give maternity leave? How much time?

99 and out: Beckham misses England selection

Former captain David Beckham was left out of Fabio Capello's first England squad today for next week's friendly against Switzerland at Wembley.

The LA Galaxy midfielder, who was hoping to win his 100th cap, has not played a competitive match since England's 3-2 defeat by Croatia in a Euro 2008 qualifier last November but had been training with Arsenal in a bid to maintain his fitness.

There were call ups for two uncapped players, Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor and defender Curtis Davies who is on loan at Villa from West Bromwich Albion.

Goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who lost his place for England's 3-2 defeat by Croatia in November and has since been dropped by his club Tottenham Hotspur, failed to make the squad.

Capello said Beckham's exclusion did not mean the end of the former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder's international career.

When you see a guy in the train tracks like that, you don't need to take three, four steps to increase your speed before you hit the guy," said Toronto's Boyd Devereaux, who made a comeback after being told in 2000 his career was over because of a concussion.

Campbell, who acts as the NHL's disciplinarian, cites an interesting discussion with Flyers GM Paul Holmgren after one of numerous transgressions by his players.

"I said, `Homer, he was hitting to hurt him,'" recalled Campbell. "He said, `Well, don't we hit to hurt?' I said, `I'm not so sure. That's a good question.'"

Yet Campbell calls the lack of respect theory "a crock."

"I just think that that's overblown and the players who say it don't understand," he said. "Players are competitive.
