Macao Chief Executive presents 2007 awards to 42 recipients

MACAO, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Macao Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah Friday presented the annual honors and awards of 2007 to 42 outstanding persons and entities at the city's Cultural Center.

The recipients came from all walks of life. They were honored or awarded in recognition of their contribution to the development of the special administration region (SAR) or for their dedicated public and community services.

Macao magnate Stanley Ho Hung Sun and Leong Sut U received the Grand Lotus Medal of Honor, for their contribution to enhancing the SAR's image, reputation and development. Peter Pan and Ngan In Leng were awarded the Golden and Silver Lotus Medals of Honor, respectively.

Other 19 outstanding individuals and entities were awarded the Medal of Merit in seven categories including profession, industry and commerce, tourism, education, culture, and sport for their distinguished services in promoting the development of relevant sectors in Macao.

Pretend IRS scammers call Iowans

According to a news release from the IRS, there is an e-mail scam that claims the recipient is eligible for a tax refund, then provides a link to a fake IRS Web site. The IRS recommends that recipients do not click on links in, or open attachments on these e-mails.

"Most of these are abroad," Brammer said.

Canada is a particular concern. Brammer said a common scam is people receive a notice that they have won a prize in Canada for $500,000. To get the prize, people are asked to cash a counterfeit check for a few thousand dollars and wire the money to an address in Canada.

"That is extremely common," Brammer said.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Ontario Provincial Police and the Canadian Competition Bureau have teamed up to fight scams by creating the Canadian Anti-fraud Call Centre.

Soccer teams have mixed results in openers

Following that game, the Panthers will take on Top 10 The Woodlands in their next home contest, which is Friday night.

On the girls side, Lufkin had its struggles in the season opener. A talented and tall College Park team was able to control the action on its way to a 4-0 win.

However, the Lady Panthers still have plenty of room for optimism.

College Park is one of the district favorites, while Lufkin (7-4) should still have some momentum after winning seven of its first nine games before a pair of losses last week.

The Lady Panthers will look to get back on track as they host Oak Ridge on Tuesday night at 7. Oak Ridge (1-9-2) opened district play with a 2-0 loss to The Woodlands.

The iPhone's biggest weakness is its lack of support for enterprise email platforms like Microsoft's Exchange and IBM's Lotus Notes. It looks like that's changing. Reports are circulating that IBM is close to announcing a version of Notes for the iPhone, and based on what I'm hearing that is pretty close to the mark, though an announcement may not come this week, as has been reported elsewhere.

The main importance is that iPhone owners who want to access their corporate email from the device will be able to do it with the full support of their corporate IT departments, which to now have been skittish about supporting the iPhone for a variety of reasons, most of which can be traced nothing more than uncertainty, and/or simply not wanting to support another wireless device.

InformationWeek reported that a version of Lotus for the iPhone would be announced at the Lotusphere conference in Orlando this week.
