Australia: “Lefts” sign-up with Rudd Labor

At the start of 2008 the new Labor government confronted two salient political facts: on the one hand demands from the ruling elite for a major assault on government spending and welfare, and for labour market “discipline” and reform. But at the same time it confronted a public mood directly opposed to any such program. Rudd’s speech to the stolen generations, accompanied by a massive public relations exercise, can only be understood within this context.

In their unanimous support for Rudd’s apology, the liberal left and its allies have come forward to repackage Labor, right at the point where it is preparing a major assault on the social position of the working class.

This process was acknowledged last week by Rod Cameron, a well-known Labor Party pollster and strategist.

Fisichella favors Ferrari

Although Ferrari have spent the past two weeks testing away from main rivals McLaren - the Scuderia were in Bahrain while McLaren tested at Jerez - Fisichella believes Ferrari's F2008 has looked the more impressive of the two cars.

"This year the Cavallino is clearly the team to beat and then it is McLaren," Fisichella told Gazetta dello Sport, referring to Ferrari's Prancing Horse logo.

"The Ferrari is definitely ahead. And then it's the McLaren with the others behind."

As for his own prospects, Fisi reckons it's going take a bit of an adjustment lapping at the back of the field but the Roman is confident Force India will improve as the season progresses.

"At the beginning of the season we may be in last place but we hope to succeed in getting the best results possible and to achieve our goals for the year." he said.

Through tragedy, crew member works to put Earnhardt in victory lane

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A blind child who could see. A deaf child who could hear. A miracle is a miracle, no mat-ter how short it lasts.Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s big victory in his debut with his new team was a speed bump compared to one crew member's struggle to help his family with life and death — all while continuing his work to put Earnhardt in victory lane. That's why Earnhardt's Hendrick Motorsports crew dedicated their win in Saturday's Budweiser Shootout exhibi-tion race to teammate Joey Arnold, whose 4-year-old son, Cayden, had died eight days earlier.Crew chief Tony Eury Jr. choked up with emotion during the postrace news conference, saying how stunned he was to return to the team's shop in Charlotte from a recent test session and find Arnold already back at work and talking about, of all things, winning the Daytona 500.“I said ‘Joey, what are you doing here?' His kid had died the day before," Eury said.
